Tom merged his business with fellow South Windsor insurance agent,

Lou Dube to form Burgess Dube. It was then that Tom began focusing on providing

insurance coverages for local businesses. Years later they split their businesses and Tom continued developing his book of business accounts, with contractors being his biggest niche.

In 1974, Vincent Prestileo joined the agency as a personal lines sales associate. He purchased the agency from Tom in 1983 and has been its sole owner ever since. The focus of the agency continued to be directed to developing a solid base of business clients with contractors continuing to be the bulk of the business.

Bob Prestileo joined the agency after 20 years experience in the pension and group department of Aetna Life & Casualty. Bob brought to our clients much needed products of Life, Group Health, Pensions, Disability, and Investments

The agency developed expertise in Business Insurance and provided its customers with insurance coverages specifically designed to meet their own unique needs. Not satisfied with offering the “simplified” insurance programs that had become commonplace in the industry, we used our years of experience in the business insurance field to search our insurance companies and products that would suit our varied clients. In that regard, we have concentrated in the harder to place accounts and have developed a large client base of not only contractors, but also garage and towing accounts, day care facilities, pizza delivery and restaurants, golf courses, property owners, trucking companies and equipment dealers.

With the development of unique approach to product design for our customers, Burgess Insurance has expanded our marketing territory and now is licensed and has clients throughout the states of Connecticut, Massachusetts New Jersey and Georgia. Despite the larger geographical area we now service, our focus is still on the relationships we establish with our clients. This commitment to our clients has enabled us to retain their business year after year giving them the stability they desire while being able to offer them a choice of insurance carriers from our wide range of markets.

Our History

Thomas M. Burgess Company

After years as a tobacco farmer, Tom Burgess began his insurance career with Farm Family, selling crop hail insurance to local farmers. He founded Thomas M. Burgess Company when close friend and local insurance agent Charlie Enes sold him his small insurance agency to become the first Town Clerk for South Windsor. Tom’s focus was serving the local community for all their personal insurance needs. Over the years, Tom would become a member of the first town council for South Windsor, one of the founders of South Windsor Bank and Trust, and a founder and charter member of South Windsor Rotary.
